South Beach Diet
Review Official website: South Beach Diet Cardiologist Dr. Arthur Agatston developed the South Beach Diet as an alternative to low-fat, high-carb diets that were popular in the 90’s. The South Beach Diet is rich in protein, complex carbs, and healthy fats. Phases of South Beach The South Beach Diet is broken into phases which dictate the type of foods you can eat. Phase 1 is very restrictive – few carbs are allowed. No bread, rice, potatoes, pasta, fruit, candy, or alcohol. Foods you get to eat include – lean meats, tofu, nuts, eggs, beans, reduced-fat cheese, and vegetables. This induction phase lasts 2 weeks. Dr. Agatston claims you can lose 8-13 pounds during this phase. Phase 2 reintroduces complex carbs, such as fruits and whole-grain pastas and breads. You stay on this phase until you reach your goal weight. Expect to lose about 1-2 pounds a week. Phase 3 is the maintenance phase and varies little from Phase 2. In Phase 3 you are encouraged to experiment with recipes and make healthy eating your lifestyle. Why all the phases? Dr. Agatston claims the carb restrictions in Phase 1 are required to “break sugar addiction”. The necessity of Phase 1 is questionable. The restrictiveness of Phase 1 may help you lose a large amount of weight (mostly water) quickly and give you a boost of confidence. Or you might find Phase 1 too strict and quit in a few days. Phase 1 one may just be a marketing gimmick – lose up to 13 pounds in two weeks! That claim would not be possible if you started the diet on Phase 2. Phase 3 is nearly identical to Phase 2 and the need for it is questionable. In my humble opinion, Phase 2 is the South Beach Diet. Phase 1 and 3 are just marketing gimmicks. Book vs. Online Whether you buy the book or join the online program, the diet is the same. The online program offers more recipes, forums, a weight tracker, and other weight loss tools. Pros: • Phase 2 is balanced and healthy • Provides numerous recipes • Learning to cook healthy will help with maintenance Cons: • Phase 1 is too restrictive Bottom Line If you want to lose ten pounds fast, Phase 1 should get you there. If you want long-term weight loss, Phase 2 will get you there if you have the willpower to get through Phase 1 first. More Info South Beach Diet South Beach Diet Books |
